Can Tho: Arrested after 38 years of escaping from prison

After 38 years of hiding while serving a sentence for robbery, a man named Son Hiep was returned to prison.

Vietnam detective agency, Son Hiep continuously changed his name, moved around the West, and lived as a hired hand.

Son Hiep lived with his wife and two children in Au Tho hamlet, Lac Hoa commune, Vinh Chau district, Hau Giang province, Vietnam.

In 1986, he committed a robbery of a citizen’s property and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

On May 4, 1987, while working at Kenh 5 Rehabilitation Camp (now Kenh 5 Prison Camp in Hoa Luu commune, Can Tho city), Son Hiep escaped.

Son Hiep changed his identity many times, went to Ca Mau and then Bac Lieu to work for hire and make a living.

In 1996, after his wife died, he and another woman moved to Nhu Gia commune, continued to work for hire and stabilized their lives there.

Through the monitoring process, the Criminal police force of Can Tho city police, in coordination with Kenh 5 Prison and Nhu Gia Commune Police, arrested Son Hiep.

The authorities continue to investigate and handle the case according to regulations in Vietnam.
