Da Nang City: Prosecution of former Deputy Chief Justice

Phạm Tấn Hoàng, former Deputy Chief Judge of the High People’s Court in Da Nang (now the Appellate Court of the Supreme People’s Court in Da Nang), has been officially indicted by the Supreme People’s Procuracy’s investigative agency for “Receiving bribes” under Article 354 of the Penal Code.

On July 17, 2025, Mr. Hoàng voluntarily turned himself in and admitted to receiving 140 million VND (approx. 5,500 USD) to influence the appellate ruling of a defendant in a murder case, reducing the sentence by 1.5 years. He also returned the full amount of the bribe.

Additionally, Mr. Hoàng was accused of taking bribes in another cassation case in Quang Tri Province, involving a contract dispute, in which he allegedly ruled in favor of one party.

His indictment brings the total number of individuals prosecuted in the bribery ring at the Da Nang High People’s Court to 27.

The case is being closely monitored by the Central Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption.

Previously, several other officials — including Phạm Việt Cường, also a former Deputy Chief Judge — along with judges, prosecutors, court clerks, and lawyers, were indicted on similar charges of receiving bribes to influence court proceedings.
