Two young men from Lao Cai have been prosecuted and temporarily detained by authorities in Bac Ninh Province for investigation.
They are accused of fraud involving the appropriation of property by overlaying payment QR codes at multiple shops.
According to initial findings, between April 3 and April 6, Nguyen Duy Minh (22) and Tuong Dinh Truc (19) took advantage of late-night hours when stores were unattended.
They pasted their personal account QR codes over the original payment QR codes at shops in Dai Dong Commune. In total, around 20 payment points were replaced.
When customers made purchases and scanned the QR codes to transfer money, the funds were not sent to the shop owners but were instead transferred directly to Minh’s personal account.
Within just a few days, the account received approximately 85 transactions, totaling nearly VND 6.5 million.
The case was uncovered after residents reported mistakenly transferring money while making QR payments. Authorities are continuing to investigate and expand the case.
Officials have also warned the public to carefully verify the recipient’s name displayed on banking applications before confirming any transfer to avoid falling victim to fraud.
