346 Arrested in World Cup 2026 Betting Crackdown

Police nationwide dismantled 73 football betting cases during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with a total of 346 people found to be involved.

The information was announced on July 2 by Colonel Bui Tuan Anh, Deputy Director of the Criminal Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security.

According to Colonel Bui Tuan Anh, football betting remains widespread in Vietnam, particularly on online platforms.

Vietnam detective agency, these activities are often linked to other forms of crime.

In response, the Ministry of Public Security launched a nationwide crackdown throughout the World Cup.

During the investigation, authorities seized numerous assets and equipment connected to the betting operations. Investigations into additional gambling and betting syndicates are ongoing.

Authorities also reported a rise in online copyright infringement involving football tournaments.

Offenders frequently change domain names, host servers overseas, and use anonymous services, intermediary platforms, and multiple technical layers to conceal their identities.

Separately, between May 7 and June 19, the Economic Police initiated legal proceedings in 90 intellectual property-related cases involving 142 suspects.

Among them were 10 cases involving 43 suspects accused of copyright infringement, 58 cases involving 71 suspects linked to industrial property rights violations, and 22 cases involving 28 suspects charged with manufacturing and trading counterfeit goods.

Police also seized and froze assets valued at approximately VND 94 billion.
