Hanoi police have arrested Nguyen Van Hoa, former head of Minh Tan hamlet, along with six other suspects in a case involving alleged violations in the Soc Son protective forest area.
The information was announced at a press conference on October 1 by Senior Colonel Nguyen Duc Long, Deputy Director of Hanoi Police.
Hoa is accused of accepting bribes. Investigators have not yet disclosed the specific alleged offenses of each suspect.
The case has attracted public attention following reports of numerous villas, homestays and resorts being built around Dong Do Lake, where there are signs of violations of regulations governing forest land management and use.
On September 4, the Kim Anh commune authorities mobilized approximately 90 personnel and machinery to demolish four violating structures in Thai Vu hamlet.
Among them, the Solara Dong Do resort had approximately 475 square meters of structures subject to demolition, while Huy Hoang Homestay had 12 structures targeted for enforcement.
The other two properties covered areas of more than 198 square meters and 154 square meters, respectively.
The violations were identified as including the unauthorized conversion of protective forest land for non-agricultural purposes, construction without the required permits, and alterations to the natural terrain.
Local authorities acknowledged that some violating structures had emerged without being addressed promptly.
Meanwhile, encroachment on forest land in Soc Son has persisted for years, despite previous findings by inspection authorities of multiple violations in forest land management.
The arrests mark a new development in the investigation into alleged violations involving construction and the operation of tourism and accommodation businesses in the Soc Son protective forest area.
