Phone Snatcher Arrested After 170km Chase in Ho Chi Minh City

Police Chase Suspect for Nearly 170km, Arrest Phone Snatcher

Ho Chi Minh City police have arrested a phone-snatching suspect after a nearly 170km pursuit.

The chase took place in heavy rain. The suspect repeatedly changed direction in an attempt to escape.

On July 16, Phu Giao Commune Police said they had detained Ngo Ngoc Tai, 30, a local resident. He is being investigated for robbery by snatching.

According to investigators, the incident happened on the morning of July 15. A six-year-old girl, identified as T.H.N., was using a mobile phone in front of her house.

A man riding a white Honda Future motorcycle suddenly approached. He grabbed the phone and sped away toward Tam Lap Roundabout.

After receiving the report, Phu Giao Commune Police coordinated with the Criminal Police Division (PC02) of Ho Chi Minh City Police. Officers immediately launched a search operation.

Multiple teams were deployed along major routes. Detectives tracked the suspect’s movements.

During the escape, the suspect repeatedly changed his route. He traveled from Phu Giao toward downtown Ho Chi Minh City.

He then headed to Binh Khanh Ferry in an attempt to reach Can Gio Commune. Investigators believe he was trying to mislead the pursuing officers.

Despite heavy rain, the police continued the pursuit. By the afternoon of the same day, officers intercepted and arrested Ngo Ngoc Tai on Rung Sac Road in Can Gio Commune. The chase had covered nearly 170km.

A search of the suspect’s motorcycle led to the recovery of the stolen mobile phone, which had been hidden inside the vehicle’s storage compartment.

The suspect was then taken to Phu Giao Commune Police headquarters for further investigation. Authorities are continuing to examine the case.
