Woman Pretends to Buy Gold, Puts on Jewelry and Runs Away

On October 5, police in Tay Ninh province said they had prosecuted and detained Vo Thi Thu Ut, 35, for allegedly committing robbery.

Vietnamese detectives, according to the investigation, Ut was in debt and had no money to spend.

On September 18, Ut rode a motorbike to a gold shop in Vinh Hung Commune, Tay Ninh Province. She pretended to be a customer looking to buy gold.

Ut asked the shop owner to show her a 24-karat gold bracelet weighing five chi. She also asked for a 24-karat gold ring weighing five chi.

After receiving the jewelry, Ut put the bracelet on her left wrist. She also put the ring on her middle finger.

Ut then said she did not have enough cash or money in her bank account. She told the shop owner that her husband would bring the money.

However, Ut did not call her husband. She continued sitting inside the shop.

A short time later, Ut took advantage of a moment when the shop owner was distracted. She put the gold jewelry on herself and ran outside.

The shop owner noticed what had happened and raised the alarm. Several people joined the pursuit. Ut was caught shortly afterward.

Police in Tay Ninh Province have opened a criminal case and prosecuted Ut as a suspect. She was also placed in temporary detention for further investigation.

Vietnam detective agency, the case remains under investigation.
